THAT DREADED BATHROOM MOLD
Symptoms, Warning Signs, and Taking Action

A musty or sour smell in your bathroom could be a sign of mold.

Molds are various types of fungi that grow in filaments and reproduce by forming spores. There are thousands of known species of molds, some of which can be found on decaying foods and in moisturous places. Because mold requires moisture for growth, bathrooms are one of the most common places where mold can reside; black mold being the most common and most dangerous.

Black mold resides and grows in small, dark rooms that are warm and humid. Mold spores, known as the seed of mold, can often fill the air giving off an unpleasant smell of staleness. But not all mold will be detectable through your sense of smell, and for this reason, mold can be present but undetectable.

Warning Signs
If your bathroom has an earthy smell, it is most likely coming from rotting wood and there is likely to be mold present.

Small ants and/or carpenter ants in your bathroom or tub could also be a sign that there is hidden mold beneath your tiles or floorboards. Moist environments support mold and other life like ants.

Tiles which have a muddy appearance can also be a sign of mold. Muddy looking tiles may in fact be black mold and can be on the walls or in the shower or bathroom floor.

Spongy floor boards and loose tiles are extremely vulnerable to leaks, causing rotting beneath the surface which can create areas for mold growth.
